Exploring Ravel: Interpretation and Performance in Miroirs (1905)

This Lecture Recital explores Maurice Ravel’s five-movement suite Miroirs (1905) for solo piano from a variety of perspectives. Drawing on research I undertook for my Doctor in Music Performance degree, the presentation will explore the ways in which ideas in various fields of musicology – criticism, aesthetics & performance studies – can be absorbed into the process of interpretation by the practicing pianist. Ideas relating to the agency of the performer, the imaginative conceptualisation of sound, and the interpretative potential of the score will be addressed. A performance of Miroirs will be interspersed with snapshots from the artistic research process, as well as some insights on teaching this repertoire.
